I'm an Australian expatriate who moved from the East Coast of Australia to the urban elegance of lovely Madrid.

As I've made this shift I realised that making a great expatriate life isn't just about joining groups, learning the language, managing the practical things and wearing your best smile as you meet new people.

 

I learned that I needed to build a mindset of openness and curiosity and to be intentional about taking steps towards the things that would help me to have the best experience.

 

For me this started with working to be physically fit so that I had the energy to do and see everything I wanted to. What I also noticed was that it helped me to feel capable and ready to manage other challenges because I had an experience of being successful at making a change in one part of my life.
