Is the expat experience about making a living or making a life?

Lit pathway leading to a glowing orange structure with "WeJe" text, flanked by tall palm trees and lush green foliage at night.
A beautifully illuminated pathway flanked by rich tropical foliage leads to an ornate, glowing entrance under the night sky. Towering palm trees stand sentinel on either side, enhancing the enchanting and serene atmosphere.

As a Professional Coach fro Expat Women I know that this question confronts many women living abroad.

To answer this consider that we all different combinations of the same three things:

  • Time

  • Energy

  • Material Resources

How are you spending yours?

Chances are you moved abroad to:

  • get ahead – in your career

  • discover new people and places that inspire you

  • challenge yourself – your mindset, your ideas, your beliefs

  • make a difference – in a way that matters to you

  • create a new, fascinating story of who you are …

As you landed you had energy and excitement for all of this …

Pretty soon reality bites and you are, as they say, ‘hitting the ground running’. 6 months in and the energy and excitement are a distant memory.

You’ve probably heard the quote (or seen the ‘inspirational’ card) …

‘Remember why you started’

I’m calling this out …

It’s not enough to wistfully recall your dream. Simply remembering will not miraculously carry you forward towards the life you want.

Making a dream happen … getting past surviving to thriving … takes more than looking backwards, more than trying to manifest your dream into being.

It takes some clear thinking and a plan – not exciting, not ‘woo’, but true.

We all make decisions about how we use our time, energy and the things we have at our disposal - all the time – consciously or unconsciously.

  • As you build and live your life abroad what decisions are you making?

  • How do you spend your time, energy and resources?

  • How do you want to spend your time, energy and resources?

  • What’s the gap?

Clear thinking and a plan can close the gap and give you a great story to tell!
