Whenever in life you decided to make the move abroad, I’ll guarantee that questions from family and friends all started with …
‘But what about …
At 25 – ‘But what about college and your career – how will you set yourself up professionally?’
At 35 – ‘But what about the kids – how will they cope?’
At 45 – ‘But what about your financial security for the future – won’t this cost a lot?’
At 55 – ‘But what about the grandchildren – won’t you miss them?’
This (and my experience providing professional coaching to expat women) tells me three important things:
Not everyone shares our energy, optimism and heart for adventure.
People who love us want for us the things we want for ourselves– connection, professional and personal purpose, financial security and a sense of being accessible for people who love us – all of which you can find at home and abroad.
There is no right time in life to move – there’s only a right time for you.
For us (me and my co-adventurer in life, Simon) the right time came after children were successfully raised and independent, living lives of purpose with people they love, the mortgage had been paid and the last child, Alby (our rambunctious Jack Russell Terrier - see above) had crossed the rainbow bridge.
We looked at each other and said – ‘this is the right time – let’s do it’.
For you I’m sure there was or will be, if you’re in the planning stages of an expat move, a time when it felt right.
And here’s the thing …
Once you know that the time is right for you …… the ‘But what about questions’ don’t really need an answer.
If your're thinking about you're answers to 'but what about?' you might find this Self-Coaching workbook helpful.
